Retired European Tire Journalist, Mike Scanlon, Has Died

Feb. 9, 2018

Mike Scanlon, retired publisher and managing editor of European Tyre Trade News magazine, one of the UK’s leading publications, has died.

Scanlon had "served the UK and European tire markets with his journalistic skill and passion for tires for over a quarter of a century," reports John Stone, Modern Tire Dealer’s European Notebook columnist.

“I met Mike in 1994 not long after I started my career as a tire, wheel and automotive journalist for Tyres & Accessories, and we both became part of the international media pack covering new tire launches throughout Europe in many of the continent’s famous cities and proving tracks,” says Stone. “At this time I still had a lot to learn about our industry, but Mike, with his customary understanding and charm, took it upon himself to help and guide me through these early days, especially at various tire and wheel shows around the world, which is something I have always really appreciated and will never forget.”

In 2000 Stone joined Tyre Trade News as editor and worked with Scanlon for four years before he launched Sapphire Media, a business media consulting company. “Immediately from the start of this new venture, Mike supported my decision and thankfully was just a phone call away if I needed any help or advice, which at the time was incredibly invaluable to me,” Stone says.

“In fact, over the past 14 years I have always remained close to Mike and the Tyre Trade team and we often covered the same industry breaking news events, and it was always a pleasure to meet up again. Also, sometimes I covered events on behalf of the magazine – such was our close working business relationship, and I have no hesitation in stating that Mike has been a major influence on my career in the global tire industry and a mentor regarding the growing international success of Sapphire Media.”

Scanlon had been in deteriorating health the last few years and retired from the magazine in 2017. “Unfortunately, I have not been able to see him during his final few months. However, I can reflect on so many great memories of working with him on numerous stories and projects over the years which will remain me with me forever" says Stone.

“Like many tire professionals before him, in my opinion Mike was a legend in the UK and European tire industry and well known to every single tire company. Therefore, his legacy of knowledge throughout the automotive media and his memory will always be with me. “

A memorial service for Scanlon is planned for next week.
