DENSO takes Japanese technology to Germany

Sept. 13, 2011

DENSO Corp. will exhibit at the 64th IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, from Sept. 15-25, 2011. DENSO will introduce its latest technologies and products that will support the theme; “Connecting Drivers, Vehicles and the Society.”

The company's main exhibit, “Resonance 2021,” is a vehicle cockpit simulator designed for the automotive society in 2021 (see photo). By connecting drivers, vehicles and the society, the simulator showcases the following functions that drivers want and expect, while ensuring safety.

1. Active Steering Wheel System. When the system detects an imminent collision, the steering wheel vibrates to alert the driver of the situation and also automatically takes controls of the steering wheel to help the driver stay safe when needed.

2. Smart Map Monitor System. It is designed to ease traffic congestion and make driving more convenient and comfortable by informing the driver of real-time road conditions and changing traffic hazards using cloud networking.

3. Information Guide System. This system connects with the driver’s personal computer and/or Smartphone to analyze the driver’s preferences, and proposes a preferred type of shop or restaurant to the driver when visiting new places.

DENSO also will display other “connecting” technologies, such as its remote touch controller, sensing system, infrastructure cooperative system and Smartphone connectivity technology; its new Tandem Solenoid starter for stop/start systems; and technologies for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles.

For its first quarter ended June 30, 2011, DENSO posted consolidated net income of 2.6 billion yen ($32 million) on net sales of 630.2 billion yen ($7.8 billion). Compared to a year ago, income and sales were down 94.4% and 21.5%, respectively.

”Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, production level was considerably low in April and May,” says Sadahiro Usui, executive director. “However, it has rapidly recovered since June, and now overall production is close to pre-quake levels."
