Yokohama Tire Corp. has won the Environmental Achievement of the Year award in recognition of environmental advances in the tire industry at the Tire Technology Expo in Cologne, Germany. The company was recognized for its environmental initiatives that include guidelines for the preservation of biodiversity, where the company investigates and determine whether its activities adversely affect the natural environments around its business locations.
Yokohama was also recognized for its:
* Forever Forest Project, under which the company has planted 183,000 trees with the goal of planting 500,000 in total at seven domestic and 11 overseas production sites.
* Use of solar power, especially at its Chinese subsidiary Hangzhou Yokohama Tire, where solar panels have cut CO2 emissions by 94 tons per year.
* Zero emissions status at its tire manufacturing plants in Thailand and the Philippines where no waste is subject to direct landfill disposal.
* Target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020 through the use of natural energies, adopting highly efficient equipment and otherwise conserving energy.
