The Tire Retread Information Bureau (TRIB) will take legal action and/or lobby California legislators to exempt retreaders from the state's controversial waste tire manifest law -- but only with the help of interested retreaders.
Last week, TRIB met once again with the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) in an effort to win retreaders exemption from the rule, but its pleas "fell on deaf ears," according to TRIB Managing Director Harvey Brodsky,
"It is not clear to me whether there is enough interest by California retreaders for us to move forward," he says.
"The only way we can proceed is if enough (retreaders) get back to me with a 'yes' vote for us to proceed and a commitment to help fund any legal/lobbying efforts that might be necessary."
Brodsky wants interested parties to contact him by phone at (888) 473-8732 or by e-mail via [email protected] and pledge their support by Sept. 30.
"If there is not enough interest we will have to drop this project and chalk it up as a win for the bureaucrats."
California's new waste tire manifest law, which went into effect on July 1, subjects retreaders of fines up to $25,000 per day per violation for "offenses" as minor as failing to fill out a manifest form correctly or even carrying a manifest form that another party filled out incorrectly or incompletely.
Brodsky calls the law "draconian" and has been fighting to overturn it or at least exempt retreaders from it since its inception.
