Fire under control at Bridgestone plant

Sept. 9, 2003

Firefighters have contained the blaze that broke out yesterday at a Bridgestone Corp. commercial truck and bus tire plant 60 miles north of Tokyo.

Though some of the tires made at the Tochigi, Japan, factory are shipped to the United States, Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire LLC (BFNT) officials say the development will not have much of an impact domestically.

"It's not a significant issue for us," says a BFNT spokesperson.

More than 850 people work at the plant, which also manufactures some passenger, light truck and monorail tires.

There were no injuries, according to wire reports.

BFNT could not comment on when production will resume at the facility.
