EU proposes label for OE, replacement tires

Nov. 24, 2008

All original equipment and replacement tires in Europe may be required to come with a standardized label containing data about rolling resistance, braking performance and noise levels.

The requirement, proposed in a directive by the European Commission, could go into effect as soon as October 2012 if approved by the European Union.

Continental AG says it "welcomes the initiative... to provide motorists with standardized information on tire characteristics.

"However, we would explicitly point out the problem areas to be expected during implementation in the 27 countries of the EU. In particular, this includes the question of sanction mechanisms which can be used to move all manufacturers - as well as importers of low-price Asian tires - toward diligent implementation."
