Jury finds Goodyear guilty of gender bias

Jan. 29, 2003

A jury in U.S. District Court in Anniston, Ala., has found Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. guilty of gender bias.

"We are obviously disappointed with the verdict," says a Goodyear spokesman. "We have numerous, legitimate reasons for appeal, and we will appeal."

The suit was brought by Lilly Ledbetter, a former Goodyear tire plant manager.

The judgement of $3.8 million includes $3.3 million in punitive damages. However, there is a federal cap of $300,000 for punitive damages on employment-related awards.
