The votes by both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate are still to come, but the Tire Industry Association (TIA) says the highway bill will pass both chambers.
In addition to providing the first long-term funding plan for America’s highways in a decade, the bill will require tire dealers to register tires at the point-of-sale. President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill.
The House and Senate will both conduct straight up-or-down votes on the bill, without the opportunity to make amendments. “It will pass both houses overwhelmingly,” TIA says in its latest legislative update.
“TIA would like to thank its members for the tremendous grassroots response on this issue which results in having language added to the bill in conference requiring the Secretary of Transportation to conduct a study reviewing available technologies on the best way to proceed,” says TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield.
That addition will require the Secretary of Transportation to conduct a study on the feasibility of all tire manufacturers to include electronic Tire Identification Number data on every tire, and for all manufacturers to use identical technology. TIA says the results of that study then must be submitted to the Senate's Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and the House's Committee of Energy and Commerce.
