The Tire Industry Association (TIA) is encouraging members to sign an online petition asking Congress to reject a mandatory tire registration provision in the transportation bills recently passed by the House and Senate.
The petition is posted on the Change.org website. The website allows TIA to collect signatures and send them to members of Congress. TIA says it “collected stacks of signatures” for its petition during the 2015 Global Tire Expo Nov. 2-6 in Las Vegas. Now the association is taking its efforts to fight mandatory tire registration to more members via an online petition.
In the petition, TIA says tire retailers oppose:
* Shifting the liability and cost for tire registration to the retailer.
* Returning to an archaic pencil and paper registration system that Congress ended in 1982.
* Requiring retailers to turn their customer lists over to manufacturers as manufacturers begin online tire sales.
* Fining retailers up to $1,000 per tire and $700,000 per location for failure to properly register tires.
TIA says tire retailers support tire manufacturers and retailers coming together to develop an industry solution to improve registration and recall performance.
