Avon Tyres preview 2015 Ulster Grand Prix

Aug. 4, 2015

The Irish road racing season is now in full swing, and one of the premier events kicks off this week. The Ulster Grand Prix runs until 08 August, at the legendary Dundrod circuit, and Avon Tyres will be there supporting its riders.

The Ulster Grand Prix is known as the fastest race in the world, thanks to the incredibly quick lap speeds, which average well over 130mph for the top riders. So it's a massive challenge for the bike, riders, and of course, the tyres. There's no margin for error during most road races, but at Dundrod, the limits are even finer.

Ivan McKillop, Avon motorcycle tyre distributor in Northern Ireland commented, saying, "Our best man, Ian Morrell, is out for this year having had a bad crash at Kells. He clipped the bank with his knee and had a massive crash. He still managed to win the Ulster 400 class though, and he'll be back.

"Stephen McKeown is having a good steady year in the junior support classes too, always steadily in the top five, pushing on. He had a real good Tandragee, qualified 17th on the grid, fought his way through in the wet and finished fourth.

"Dan Cooper will give them a good rattle in the Supertwins class too! Dan's doing really well with the Avons. He's done 117mph laps at the TT on them, and you can only do that with a tyre that works."

The North of Ireland is no stranger to a bit of precipitation of course, and while the forecast is good at the moment, McKillop's ready for the rain. "Avon's been working away on the wet tyres, making enhancements to the front and the back. Some people question the Avon wets, but they work really well. Ian Morrell won the 400 class at Tandragee by 33 seconds on them, so you can't tell me they're not working!"

The Ulster Grand Prix Bike Week action starts with practice on Wednesday 05 August, with racing from 06-08 August. For more information on the Ulster Grand Prix, visit www.ulstergrandprix.net or Avon’s motorcycle Facebook page.
