Puerto Rico retreader John Sherwood dies

John Sherwood, president of Tristani Rubber Industries in San Juan, Puerto Rico, passed away on June 21, 2015.

He grew up in Beaumont, Texas and graduated from The University of Texas where he received a degree in petroleum engineering in 1958 with honors. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S Air Force and was stationed in Guam as the island’s petroleum officer.

Following his military service Sherwood worked for Carter Oil in Oklahoma. He then applied to and received an MBA from Harvard’s Graduate Business School in 1965. He worked for a short time for Boise Cascade in San Francisco and then moved to Puerto Rico where he, his brother Robert Sherwood and a fellow business school friend saw an opportunity and founded Tristani Rubber industries in 1970. They manufactured tread rubber for the Puerto Rico and Caribbean market.  Later the Sherwood brothers bought out their partner.

Tristani expanded into custom rubber compounding and passenger and truck tire retreading serving the Puerto Rico and Caribbean markets.

John was a quite unassuming gentleman and had many friend in the industry.

John had no children and is survived by his brother Robert and wife Sylvine.
