March 18, 2015

Standard Motor Products Inc. (SMP) has selected the winner of its “Are You TechSmart?” scholarship search. Marcos Gutierrez of Oakland, Calif., enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program at Chabot College in Hayward, Calif., will receive the $5,000 scholarship to use toward his education.

Gutierrez was chosen from a field of student applicants from 31 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, SMP reports. Each applicant was judged on relevancy, creativity and thoughtfulness in regards to the automotive industry by TechSmart Technician John Filippone, a Master Technician and owner of Piedmont Tire and Auto with two locations in Gainesville and Haymarket, Va. “Based on his understanding of the importance of keeping in touch with emerging technologies,” says Filippone, “I think Mr. Gutierrez is the best candidate for the scholarship.”

Phil Hutchens, vice president engine management marketing, SMP, adds, “With the ‘Are You TechSmart?’ scholarship search, we were looking for a student who embodies the characteristics of the TechSmart brand. In other words, someone who is passionate about technical advances, innovation and meeting the challenges of automotive technology.”
