SEMA Show, Day One: NHTSA says it's looking at TPMS for heavy vehicles

Oct. 30, 2007

An offical from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says tire pressure monitoring systems for heavy vehicles are a distinct possibility.

"We expect to see work throughout 2008" on TPMS for heavy vehicles, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Jim Ports said during this morning's Tire Industry Association Breakfast with the President event in Las Vegas, Nev., part of this week's Specialty Equipment Market Association Show.

"We also understand it's much more complicated than (TPMS for) passenger tires."

Port also reported that NHTSA is drafting a notice of proposed rulemaking to update the federal regulation that governs medium truck tires.
