Pirelli, Italian college to work on MIRS, 'Cyber Tire'

Oct. 22, 2007

Pirelli & Cie SpA and the Politecnico di Torina, an Italian university, will work on the future generation of Pirelli's MIRS (Modular Integrated Robotized System) manufacturing system and development of what Pirelli calls the "Cyber Tire," an intelligent tire that will be able to share data with the vehicle.

The parties recently formed a five-year agreement "for joint research in the tire sector," say Pirelli officials.

"Pirelli has always felt that dialogue between industry and university is a fundamental element for increasing Italy’s

competitiveness," says Pirelli Chairman Marco Provera.

"This agreement is the result of a strategy oriented towards maximizing collaboration between public and private sectors in research.

"The aim of the agreement is to create synergies between innovation capabilities and research excellence of Pirelli and the

skills of the Politecnico di Torino in mechanical engineering, particularly in the automotive sector."
