Wholesaling pioneer, ex-World Tire chief Isaacson dies

Aug. 27, 2007

Maurice Isaacson, who owned World Tire Corp. and Toledo Tire Corp., died Aug. 20 at his home in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 99.

Born in Chicago, Isaacson moved to Toledo in the 1920s to help his brother, Jay, and a friend, Harry Rozsenweig, in their tire business.

Toledo Tire eventually evolved into Tireman Auto Service Centers, which has 15 locations throughout Northwest Ohio and Michigan. World Tire still operates out of its warehouse in Toledo.

"Maury and his brother were one of the first people to ever give (wholesale) customers credit," says Randy Jones, Tireman's current CEO.

Jones says Isaacson was instrumental in getting Discount Tire Co. Chairman Bruce Halle his start in Ann Arbor, Mich., by extending credit to him when nobody else would.

Isaacson was involved in the tire industry up until "a year or two ago," says Jones. "He'd give me ideas and insight into the business. His funeral was well-attended. He had a ton of friends in the industry. He loved the tire business."
