New Yokohama S.drive contains nanotechnology

July 3, 2007

Yokohama Tire Corp.'s new S.drive tire, which begins shipping this week, contains a silica-based compound featuring nanotechnology.

The tire "provides extraordinary grip and handling in sizes to fit the broad range of sport sedans and coupes like BMW 3-series, Honda Civic and the Ford Mustang," say Yokohama officials.

The tire can fit 15- to 20-inch wheels in sizes up to 285/30R20 99Y. Aspect ratios range from 30-series to 55-series.

"The initial roll-out will feature over 70 sizes and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2007."

The S.drive replaces Yokohama's AVS ES100 and outperforms its predecessor in wet and dry conditions.

Yokohama says its engineers created a silica-based compound, using nanotechnology, to conform to the road surface, "maximizing grip in wet and dry conditions.

"Tiny scores within the tire groove walls, similar to sipes on the tire's surface, effectively distribute stress loads and further reduce uneven wear."
