Former MTD correspondent Stuart Marshall dies

Stuart Marshall, longtime automotive industry journalist and former Modern Tire Dealer correspondent, died last September in England. He was 82.

Marshall wrote MTD's "European Journal" for four decades starting in the in the 1960's. His insightful column, later renamed "The Stuart Marshall Report," was a finalist in the 1987 Neal Awards competition.

He was the Financial Times motoring correspondent for more than 20 years. According to FT writer John Griffiths, he remained an occasional contributor to the Weekend FT for some years after his formal retirement in the late 1990s.

"He was a man of immense wit and charm, and a keenly sought dinner companion by leading lights of the industry," wrote Griffiths in Marshall's obituary. "Stuart brought huge enthusiasm and energy to his craft. But alongside the care and precision of his writing ran a passion for life in its widest sense."

Marshall is survived by his wife, Cherie; daughter Gilly; and grandchildren Tom and Sophie.
