NCTDA inducts two into Hall of Fame

May 3, 2013

The North Carolina Tire Dealers Association (NCTDA) has inducted Richard “Dick” Johnson and the late Jerry Gerrard into its Hall of Fame.

Johnson retired from American Tire Distributors Inc. (ATD) in April 2009 after leading the company through ten years of growth, both organic and via a series of acquisitions. Johnson was ATD’s chairman and chief executive officer from May 2003 until his retirement. His career includes serving as president and chief executive officer of ATD, president of the southeast division of Heafner Tire Group (predecessor to ATD), and president and chief operating officer of ITCO Tire Company (which merged with Heafner).

Gerrard founded Gerrard Tire Company with his father, Red, in 1972. Under Gerrard's leadership, the business grew to include a retreading plant, a truck center, a distribution warehouse and four retail stores. Gerrard’s Tire employed more than 150 employees. A U.S. Army veteran, Gerrard worked for Monkey Grip Rubber Company, the Charlotte Observer newspaper and Uniroyal Tire Company before Gerrard Tire was formed. Gerrard passed away in 2008.

The NCTDA celebrated their accomplishments at its Buying Expo & Trade Show in April.
