Nissan announces TPMS-based recall

Oct. 13, 2009

Nissan North America Inc. will recall certain model year 2008-2010 vehicles due to a faulty nut used to secure the vehicles' tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors. The material in the nut "may corrode and potentially crack in areas with heavy concentrations of road salt," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If cracking occurs, the nut may come out of the sensor and the vehicles' TPMS lamps may illuminate. "If the TPMS lamp is disregarded and the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition, the tire will quickly lose air pressure at a consistent rate, resulting in a flat tire (and) increasing the risk of crash."

The recall is expected to start no later than Nov. 9. Vehicles under recall include:

* 2008-2010 Infiniti M35.

* 2008-2010 Infiniti M45.

* 2009 Nissan Cube.

* 2009 Nissan Murano.

* 2008 Nissan Rogue.

The vehicles under recall were sold or are currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsion.

According to NHTSA, Nissan dealerships wlll replace the nut "with a new, more robust nut. This service will be performed free of charge."
