Danville workers reject Goodyear-USW contract

Sept. 11, 2009

United Steelworkers at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s Danville, Va., plant have rejected the tentative master contract between the union and the tire manufacturer. The factory builds medium truck tires.

Danville is one of seven plants covered by the agreement, which covers more than 10,000 workers.

Under terms of the tentative contract, the plant would be protected from possible closure by Goodyear.

"The contract must be approved by a majority of the membership and a majority of the plants," says Kevin Johnsen, contract coordinator for the USW.

At full capacity, the Danville factory can produce 11,200 truck tires per day, according to Modern Tire Dealer research.
