Pirelli Tire North America Inc. recently received an industry award for achieving significant improvements in plant worker health and safety over the last year. It is the company's fifth such award in the last five years.

The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) presented its Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) Award at the organization's annual meeting in St. Augustine, Fla. The award was created to encourage and reward member companies for safety and health advancements made in the workplace.

Pirelli was presented an award in the "Excellence" category, which is given to facilities that not only display superior performance in factory safety, but also continue to demonstrate significantly better performance than the overall average of RMA members.

Awards are determined by measuring the incidence rate for lost workday cases based on data supplied in an annual survey by RMA. Pirelli operates its Modular Integrated Robotized System (MIRS) consumer tire manufacturing plant in Rome, Ga.

"Pirelli's employees understand that through our commitment to safety, we are able to accomplish great things," says Andrew Kearton, vice president of manufacturing. "The safety of our employees is our number one priority, and each of us is responsible for maintaining a safe working environment at Pirelli."
