Big Three to decide if Michelin deal will be pattern

July 28, 2006

Representatives from the Big Three are slated to meet and review the tentative labor contract between Michelin North America Inc. and the United Steelworkers today, July 28, in order to decide if it will form the basis for an industry-wide pattern agreement.

The Steelworkers picked Michelin to be the target company for achieving a pattern agreement that they hope Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC will follow.

The meeting will also be attended by USW Executive Vice President Ron Hoover and other union officials.

"Pattern bargaining doesn't mean every piece of the pattern agreement will be copied exactly," says Hoover. Instead it means that components of agreements reached with each company will be "comparable."

The union and Michelin reached a tentative agreeement for three Michelin/BFGoodrich plants earlier this week.
