BFNT to participate in 50th anniversary convoy

May 2, 2006

A pair of Firestone tractor trailers will take part in an upcoming convoy to observe the 50th anniversary of the United States Interstate System.

In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the bill that created the U.S. Interstate System.

Decades earlier, Eisenhower took a coast-to-coast trip to learn if troops and supplies could successfully cross America by truck.

The trip took him past Columbiana, Ohio, the home of Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. founder Harvey Firestone, who invited "Ike" and his men to stop for a meal.

Firestone added two of his own trucks to Eisenhower's convoy the next day.
