Carroll Tire founder Bobby Carroll dies

April 20, 2006

Robert Edward "Bobby" Carroll Jr., founder of Carroll Tire Co., died on April 17. He was 78.

Carroll, of Fairburn, Ga., was born in East Point, Ga. He evolved Carroll Tire from a single retail location in Hapeville, Ga., to one of the nation's largest wholesale distributors of private and major brand tires.

"Bobby Carroll entered the wholesale tire business as a way to bring competitive and consistent pricing to a network of small independent Georgia tire dealers," says the company's Web site.

On November 18, 1998, Carroll Tire Co. merged with TBC Corp. and became the parent company's wholesale tire distributor subsidiary.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Betty Mobley Carroll; daughters Susie Watts of Newnan, Ga., and Sallie Thompson of Peachtree City, Ga.; three grandchildren, Angie, Jenny and Bobby; and two great grandchildren, Drew and Erin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 20, at the chapel of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City.
