The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released a report on tire rolling resistance earlier this week. Here is the official response from the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).
"The report was requested by Congress in 2004 at RMA's urging to examine how tire rolling resistance may affect vehicle fuel economy but also look at performance trade-offs, potential fuel saving and potential costs to consumers of additional tire purchases.
"Among the findings by the NAS is that tire rolling resistance may be reduced by 10% through a combination of improved tire technology, shifts in consumer purchases and tire maintenance. The report also acknowledges the trade off between tire rolling resistance and tread life.
"The NAS report recommends that consumers be provided with information about tire rolling resistance to aid them in tire purchases, should they want tires that maximize vehicle fuel efficiency. Also, the NAS report advocates that consumers receive a 'strong message urging vigilant maintenance of inflation must therefore be a central part of communicating information on the energy performance of tires to motorists.'
"RMA supports the NAS report's recommendations to provide consumers with information on tire rolling resistance and particularly supports the recommendation that proper tire pressure is vital to achieving improved fuel efficiency as well as promoting safety and longer-lasting tires."
