MTD Facts Issue: U.S. leads, but look out for Mexico!

Jan. 27, 2006

Tire plant capacity -- not production -- in North America in 2005 was 387 million tires, according to Modern Tire Dealer's 2006 Facts Issue.

United States capacity was more than 323 million tires, or 83.5% of the total. Canadian tire plant capacity was 43.2 million tires, or 11.2% of the total.

Because of its low-cost manufacturing base and proximity to the U.S., Mexican plant capacity increased in 2005 vs. 2004. That will be a continuing trend over the next few years.
