MTD Facts Issue: Independents continue to dominate

Jan. 20, 2006

Independent tire dealers account for 59.5% of domestic passenger tire retail sales, according to Modern Tire Dealer's 2006 Facts Issue. They gained market share in 2005 at the expense of mass merchandisers, auto supply chains (think Pep Boys-Manny, Moe and Jack) and tire company-owned stores.

In 2004, independents represented 59% of the market. Auto dealerships also increased their market share from 3% to 3.5%.

Retail sales of large tire dealers, defined as independent tire dealers with 30 or more retail outlets, make up 36.7% of the 59.5% total, or 21.9% of the $16 billion replacement passenger tire market in the United States. That compares to 34.9% and 20.6%, respectively, in 2004.
