McCarthy Tire buys Main Tire Exchange

Dec. 7, 2012

McCarthy Tire Service Co. Inc. has acquired Main Tire Exchange Inc. from the Shay family. The acquisition gives McCarthy Tire 43 service centers in seven states: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland.

Based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., McCarthy Tire also adds to its six Bandag retread plants. Dansville, N.Y.-based Main Tire Exchange brings one shop to the mix. (See "McCarthy Tire increases retread output by 12%.")

"This acquisition will allow us to improve our service coverage area and enhance our relationship with our commercial customers in the New York and northeastern region,” says President John McCarthy Jr. “With an exceptional heritage of strong customer service and state-of-the-art service centers, the Main Tire acquisition was a natural choice for growing the McCarthy Tire family.”

Main Tire Exchange's three commercial tire locations are in Buffalo, Dansville and Rochester, N.Y.

McCarthy Tire Service is a fourth generation, family-owned business headquartered in the heart of Wyoming Valley, Penn. (see photo). The company was founded in 1926 by the late Joseph J. McCarthy. It is currently run by John D. McCarthy Jr. and his father, CEO John D. McCarthy.

The addition of Main Tire Exchange increases McCarthy Tire's employee count to approximately 900.

Main Tire Exchange has been in business since 1972, although the Shay family has served the transportation industry since 1936. That includes fuel oil distribution through Shay Oil and repair services offered by Shay Trucks to freight transportation through Shay's Service.
