Kentucky proposes lead wheel weight ban

May 1, 2012

House Bill 448 has been introduced in the state of Kentucky, which would eliminate the installation of lead wheel weights within the state. The bill would become effective on January 1, 2013, if passed this session.

The bill has been forwarded to the Kentucky Transportation Committee for review. The committee could also decide to eliminate the sale and distribution of lead wheel weights into or out of the state, as was done in states like Maine and Illinois.

“We are starting to see more and more states propose lead wheel weight legislation,” stated Gregory Parker, marketing manager for Perfect Equipment Inc. “Kentucky is the second state to propose a bill this year and this means that the lead wheel weight topic is not going away. We are ready and have the capacity in place to supply the industry with non-lead materials, including OEM zinc and steel wheel weights.”
