Wisconsin considers non-lead wheel weight bill

Feb. 2, 2012

Wisconsin Assembly Bill 483, a non-lead wheel weight rule, was introduced on Jan. 24, 2012.

The bill prohibits the sale or use of lead wheel weights in connection with the installation or balancing of motor vehicle tires. The bill is currently in the hands of the state’s Committee on Transportation.

If passed, Wisconsin would become the seventh state to ban the use of lead. The last state to do so was Illinois, which had an effective date of Jan. 1, 2012.

If passed, the Wisconsin bill would be phased in over an 18-month period.

"As more states move towards non-lead legislation, it is important for businesses to research the alternatives now and be ready to make a decision," says Gregory Parker, marketing manager for Perfect Equipment Inc., makers of zinc and steel wheel weights.
