Michelin introduces next generation X-Ice

Jan. 24, 2012

Michelin North America Inc. appropriately launched its Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tire in Quebec, Canada, on Jan. 24, 2012. Engineered with innovative Michelin technology, the tire "delivers the ultimate performance and protection in all winter conditions," according to the company.

"We all want to feel safe when driving with our loved ones, no matter the weather or road conditions, and this tire does just that," says Normand Latremouille, Michelin's winter category manager. "It gives you peace of mind.

"The innovative technology in the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tire not only offers complete confidence while driving in any winter condition, but also fuel-efficiency and long-lasting performance."

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tire is manufactured using third-generation, winter-grip technology that provides it with better winter performance than its predecessor.

On ice, the tire:

* delivers 17% stronger grip, and

* stops 7% shorter.

On snow, the tire:

* provides 6% better traction and

* stops 3% shorter.

Michelin features four key technologies in the tire's tread block.

1. The Cross Z sipe enables stable handling.

2. The Block Edge provides more grip on snow and ice.

3. Micro-Pumps absorb water, which improves tread contact.

4. FleX-Ice, a rubber silica-based compound that offers unsurpassed braking.

"The unique tear-drop shape of the vertical sipes provides better grip during acceleration and braking, which helps high-speed handling," says Michelin. "Its MaxTouch Construction features a unique contact-patch shape that evenly distributes the forces of acceleration, braking and cornering and maximizes wear life.

Michelin says the tire's "perennial performance" ensures the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tire "will maintain quality performance and appearance through the life of the tire."

The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 also comes with a "Green X" marking, which designates it as a fuel efficient tire that reduces CO2 emissions while maintaining all the advantages of long wear, safety and performance.

Backed by a 40,000-mile limited tread wear warranty, the tire will be available this fall in 33 14- through 18-inch sizes. Michelin adds that the sizes will cover more than 90% of the Canadian and American winter market for cars and mini-vans -- with complementary dimensions still available in X-Ice Xi2 tires.
