Right to Repair Law Encounters Challenge

June 21, 2021

A lawsuit filed by OEM trade group Alliance for Automotive Innovation against Massachusetts' Right to Repair law is in court, according to the Auto Care Association.

The law, which state voters approved last fall by a margin of 75% to 25%, gives car owners - as well independent tire dealerships and repair facilities - access to telematically transmitted repair and diagnostic data.

The lawsuit seeks to overturn the law based on concerns around cyber-security and other issues.

The Tire Industry Association called the Right to Repair vote in Massachusetts "a victory for the entire automotive aftermarket."

The win allows independent tire dealers and auto repair shops "to remain competitive with franchise car dealership's service operations as technology in vehicles increases."
