Candidate slams retreads in TV ad

Aug. 1, 2002

Tennessee TV stations are running ads for Congressional candidate Fran Marcum that negatively compare retreads to her political opponent, according to the Tire Retread Information Bureau (TRIB).

In the spots, a race car driver points to a tire and declares that Marcum's rival "is a career politician who's wearing a little thin, just like this retread, which may look alright on the surface, but I wouldn't trust it."

Last week, TRIB asked Marcum to remove the "offensive" ad, according to TRIB Managing Director Harvey Brodksy, and her office agreed to comply.

However, the commercial was still running as of yesterday.

"We are amazed and disappointed at the insensitivity and arrogance of Fran Marcum for disrespecting an industry that is vitally important to millions of motorists and trucking fleets," says Brodsky.
