NHTSA seeks feedback on RMA-proposed guidelines for recalled tire disposal

July 26, 2002

The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) wants the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to let tire dealers return all recalled tires directly to tiremakers instead of making dealers dispose of tires themselves.

NHTSA originally proposed "that tire dealers render returned recalled tires unsuitable for use on the day removed from the vehicle or from stock, and then dispose of them in accordance with manufacturers' plans and applicable laws, in ways that minimize the deposit of tires in landfills."

The TREAD (Transportation Recall, Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation) Act demands that tire manufacturers have plans in place to prevent the resale of recalled tires and to dispose of them via methods like shredding, crumbling, recycling and other "non-vehicular" techniques, without resorting to landfills.
