Ruth Stein, Wife of Bucky Stein, Dies at 89

Aug. 30, 2016

Ruth Schreibman Stein, the wife of former tire dealer Leonard “Bucky” Stein, died peacefully at her home in Wilmington, N.C., on July 7, 2016. She was 89.

The former Rebecca Ada, also known as “Ruthy,” married Stein in 1948. Both were born in Philadelphia and celebrated their 68th anniversary in June.

The 91-year-old Stein founded Target Tire Inc. in 1963; he sold his wholesale business to American Tire Distributors Inc. in 2004, and officially retired from the tire industry in 2011. He was elected to the North Carolina Tire Dealers Association Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Tire Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2015.

According to Bucky, his wife was known for her kindness. She was most proud of her three children, Elliott, Howard and Deborah; her five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Although her last years were difficult, she enjoyed a long and happy life, always surrounded by family and friends, according to her obituary in the Charlotte Observer. “Her favorite place to be in the world was anywhere her husband was.”
