Winston still in bankruptcy

June 4, 2002

Chapter 11 proceedings for Winston Tire Co. "are progressing nicely," according to Winston Tire President Bryant Kountz.

The Torrance, Calif.-based chain has closed 20 stores since declaring bankruptcy last January, he says.

Winston now has 114 outlets throughout California.

"There are no plans to reduce that count," Kountz says.

Winston is owned by Lafayette, La.-based Performance Management Inc., which bought the dealership from Heafner Tire Group last summer.

Heafner remains a key Winston supplier "but we're also buying a lot directly from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co."

Goodyear makes the chain's Winston brand tire, which Winston has exclusive rights to in California.
