Read what Bush, Kerry had to say to Modern Tire Dealer

Oct. 14, 2004

President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry recently responded to questions from Modern Tire Dealer in time for its October issue. Their answers, which address issues important to independent tire dealers, also can be found on this Web site.

MTD asked the two main presidential candidates what they thought of small business issues that are important to retail and commercial tire dealers. The questions ranged from tax relief and rising insurance costs to the "Right to Repair Act."

* When asked, "Are you a supporter of the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act (H.R. 2735 and S. 2138)?" Senator Kerry had this to say: "Clearly, car owners, independent mechanics, and tire dealers should have access to basic vehicle information for repair purposes. Auto manufacturers also need to know that sensitive trade and patent information is protected."

* When asked, "Do you support NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) as it stands now?" President Bush had this to say: "Open markets abroad mean more potential buyers for American goods and services, and more jobs at home. Because American workers are so productive, we can compete with anyone in the world, as long as trade is free and the rules are fair."
