Tire I.D. tag now in compliance

Sept. 29, 2004

The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and EPCglobal Inc. say the revision to the AIAG´s "Tire and Wheel Label and Radio Frequency Identification" standard now complies with automotive and retail requirements by providing one global radio frequency identification tag per tire.

Tags would also be used for tracking purposes.

"By collaborating with EPCglobal on this standard to refine these provisions, we are able to provide a one-tag-fits-all solution," says AIAG Executive Director Andrew Cummins.

The "Tire and Wheel Label and Radio Frequency Identification" standard was originally designed for tires, but "could be applied to any individual vehicle part," according to AIAG officials.
