Steelworkers file anti-CTNA charge

July 20, 2004

The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) have filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleging that Continental Tire North America Inc.´s (CTNA) coming suspension of tire production at its Mayfield, Ky., plant is illegal.

CTNA plans to suspend tire production in Mayfield by the end of the year.

The USWA also is charging that "the decision to suspend tire production is based on CTNA´s unlawful motive to discourage workers at its Mount Vernon, Ill., tire facility from supporting the USWA" in an upcoming unionization election later this week.

"We received the charge and are evaluating the allegation," a CTNA spokesperson told mtdealer.com earlier today.

The company "will respond at a later point."

CTNA´s other unionized plants include Bryan, Ohio, and Charlotte, N.C.

Its Mount Vernon factory is non unionized.
