Pep Boys to carry major brand tires

May 13, 2004

Pep Boys -- Manny, Moe and Jack will officially add Continental, General, Goodyear, Michelin and Hankook tires to its tire line-up this Sunday.

"Most SKUs will be Continental and General," Pep Boys CEO Larry Stevenson told investors during a conference call this morning.

The availability of other brands will vary from market to market, he says.

"We know which SKUs within what particular brands work best for us" thanks to pilot programs the Philadelphia, Pa.-based chain ran in two test markets.

Pep Boys did not base tire selection on brand market share, according to Stevenson, "but which brands sold best in our test markets."

Pep Boys achieved $566 million in sales during the first quarter of 2004, a 10.8% increase over last year's first quarter.
