Yokohama comments (briefly) on union contract

Feb. 2, 2005

Members of United Steelworkers of America (USWA) Local 1023 have ratified a new labor agreement with Yokohama Tire Corp. and its manufacturing facility in Salem, Va.

Yokohama and the union reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract on Jan. 15. The previous contract expired in June 2003 and was extended through negotiations.

In an official statement, Yokohama said it is not releasing the details of the new agreement.

"We at Yokohama Tire Corp. are pleased with the resolution and that we could resolve our agreement in an amicable manner," said Steve Kessing, vice president of administration.

The Yokohama plant in Salem produces passenger, high performance and light truck tires. It has a plant capacity of 23,100 tires a day, according to Modern Tire Dealer's 2005 Facts Issue.
