Ford awards Michelin for fuel-efficient tire

May 18, 2010

Michelin North America has been awarded a Ford Motor Co. World Excellence Award for the ultra-low rolling resistance tire technology in the Energy Saver A/S origianl equipment tire fitted on the Ford Fusion.

Michelin earned the Recognition of Achievement Award, given to suppliers that improve customer satisfaction by providing significant contributions in key areas.

Michelin is one of 40 global suppliers to receive awards, the highest recognition for Ford’s suppliers worldwide. The awards are based on supplier performance in 2009, and recognize suppliers for exceeding standards in quality, cost, delivery and embracing the “ONE Ford” program.

The Michelin Energy Saver A/S tire allowed Ford to improve rolling resistance by 24% over the traditional fitment. The Energy Saver A/S all-season tire offers fuel efficiency without sacrificing other key performances, the company notes.

The award also recognized the Michelin passenger car and light truck plant in Lexington, S.C., where the Energy Saver A/S original equipment tire for Ford is manufactured.

“We put a high priority on meeting the needs – and exceeding the expectations of – our customers, and it is wonderful to be recognized by Ford for this achievement,” says John Moloney, vice president of original equipment marketing, Michelin North and South America. “In the case of the Ford Fusion, we looked at various materials, construction and manufacturing solutions while continuously pushing the envelope to help Ford achieve its overall fuel-efficiency goals. It is projects like this that truly accelerate progress.”
