ACCC and Del-Nat are affected by recall

March 10, 2010

More companies have officially announced recalls of size 245/70R17 SUV tires manufactured by Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. in Texarkana, Ark. According to Cooper, the total number of defective tires is 7,769.

American Car Care Centers (ACCC) and Del-Nat Tire Corp. are the latest companies to announce recalls of tires in that size. They joined Hercules Tire & Rubber Co., TBC Corp., Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack and Cooper itself.

All are "due to a defect that may lead to tread chunking or cracking in the tread shoulder area," and fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 139, "New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Vehicles," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In addition, all were manufactured sometime in November and December of last year.

ACCC notified NHTSA about a noncompliance in certain American Prospector SUV tires produced between Nov. 15 and Nov. 21, 2009. The program group says it will notify owners and replace the tires free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about March 11, 2010.

Recalls from Pep Boys and TBC were announced on March 6, 2010 (see "Next in line: Pep Boys, TBC recall SUV tires").
