Oct. 10, 2001

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has announced layoffs that will affect up to 1,400 workers at five of its domestic facilities.

"Basically, we're making scheduling and output adjustments to address the continued economic uncertainty," says Chuck Sinclair, Goodyear's director of public relations.

The affected plants are Fayetteville, N.C.; Tyler, Texas; Huntsville, Ala.; Danville, Va.; and Gadsden, Ala. The Fayetteville and Tyler facilities are former Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. plants; the Huntsville plant was run by the former Dunlop Tire Corp.

All five plants are unionized.
