Michelin and Bosch announce strategic partnership

Sept. 11, 2001

Groupe Michelin and Robert Bosch GmbH have agreed to enter into a long-term strategic partnership for the development and distribution of integrated vehicle dynamic management systems.

According to Michelin, the partnership is a "framework" for the future activities of both companies. Initial joint projects will involve braking performance and extended mobility.

"It is planned that these jointly developed technologies will gradually be made available to other suppliers, in order to favor the rapid creation of market standards," says Michelin.

The first joint development project will focus on increasing vehicle mobility in the event of a pressure loss in a tire. The companies plan to integrate the Michelin PAX System with Bosch's Electronic Stability Program (ESP) "or further brake-by-wire systems" by 2004.

By the year 2005, the companies plan to reduce passenger car braking distance by 15% "through a combination of jointly optimized ESP with high performance tires."
