Gibbons Tells Dealers What They Can Expect From TireHub

You might think juggling two companies would be hard for any CEO of a joint venture. Peter Gibbons, CEO of TireHub LLC, considers it “an exciting challenge.”

But what if one of the U.S.-based companies is a subsidiary of a Japanese parent? That means he is potentially juggling two countries as well.

Gibbons is used to dealing with two countries. Born in Scotland, he has dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States.

He comes to TireHub with these credentials:

 * executive vice president of global development and product supply for Mattel Inc.

* executive vice president of global supply chain operations for Starbucks Corp.;

* executive vice president of supply chain for ICI Paints North America.

I interviewed Gibbons on July 10th; the first part of the interview can be read by clicking here: "TireHub CEO Sheds Light on the New Joint Venture."

He gave an answer to every question I asked him in the short time allotted. That included my in-jest “Do you plan to use drones in any of your distribution?” His answer was insightful: “You never say never to anything, do you? As you can imagine, at the moment we’re pretty much standing up for our logistics in a little bit more traditional manner.”

MTD: What distribution techniques that you learned from your previous companies do you plan to use at TireHub?

Gibbons: The experience I hope I bring to this is very much focused around providing great service, great fulfillment, making sure that we provide the right tools to dealers and retailers, the right kind of… lead times, the right deliveries per day, and our ability to respond to dealers’ and retailers’ needs, which are constantly being tuned. And the thing I would stress that I’ve learned and others have learned elsewhere is just building that approach to providing great passionate service every day to every customer, every retailer, every dealer. So it’s… the way we’ve designed the network, the way we’ve designed the tools that help us drive our fulfillment, and how we drive our planning to make sure we’ve got great inventory coverage that (will help make us) a great partner to dealers and retailers across the country.

MTD: Are you still adding people? Your website says your sales and distribution team is “over 1,000 strong” (it previously said 1,400 strong).

Gibbons: We have about 1,000 employees… across the U.S. More than 100 of them will be here in Atlanta, our center. We’re still filling out some jobs; in fact we had some key people starting just this week. The field team is largely complete. We’re still filling out some of the jobs here in the center in Atlanta.

MTD: Do you consider TireHub independently run?

Gibbons: We are (an) independent management team (formed) to run the business.  You can understand Bridgestone and Goodyear as shareholders have the typical responsibility that shareholders have and traditionally have of a business like ours. But we have an independent management team. We are a joint venture of these two grand parents with great heritage and legacies. And our focus is very much on service to the retailers and dealers, and making sure they have the tires available to satisfy their consumers.

MTD: Is there anything else you want to say to our audience?

Gibbons: “This is a great opportunity. I’m totally excited about the chance to stand up and lead this business. As you can imagine, bringing people from two fine companies like Bridgestone and Goodyear is a great, exciting challenge. The people have responded with great passion to what we are doing. I think this is a chance to help the industry enormously and to help dealers and retailers in particular, and I feel very privileged to have the chance to run this new business, and to lead what I’ve found so far and will continue to find to be very fine, good people who are passionate about getting drivers on tires that they love and making sure our customers put their customers on tires that they love.”

    Peter sounds like a CEO who understands that is a retailer my customer must always come first and as a result he makes the independent dealer a priority for the company he nowleads.

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) of the 2010-2018 Ford Econoline (E150-E450) monitors the air pressure in the 4 road tires with wheel-mounted tire pressure sensors.
