The 2019 Annual Ohio Tire & Automotive Association Golf Outing proved to be more than a day on the links for a record 124 attendees. Held July 29 at The Country Club at Muirfield Village near Columbus, Ohio, golf was just a prelude to the itinerary that followed (and yes, I was one of the golfers).

OTAA executives booked Congressman Troy Balderson (R-OH 12th District) to speak to the dealers. As a member of the House Small Business Committee, he was able to pass along good news to the attendees.

He said you shouldn’t rely on CNN and Fox News for the news, adding there is a lot being done in Congress. To prove his point, he said his committee has passed 11 bipartisan small business bills in the last two months, which was welcome news to the crowd. The goal of the committee is always “to protect your livelihood.”

Specifically, the bills were designed to:

 * help dealers survive when national disasters strike;

* deal with cyber threats;

* comply with new laws;

* support veterans and service-disabled veteran businesses; and

* amend the Runway Extension Act by revising “certain requirements for prescribing size standards for small businesses,” said Congress.gov.

Jamie Hensley, who runs four Jamie’s Tire & Service locations, presided over the event as the new association president. And he was in a giving mood.

The OTAA's annual golf tournament received a lot of support.

Not counting the golf awards (Hensley handed out a prize to himself for being on the second place scramble team), he first gave the William Floyd Distinguished Service Award to Dave Zielasko, former editor and publisher of Tire Business and now vice president of marketing and communications for the Tire Industry Association.

He also handed a $2,500 check to the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF) on behalf of the OTAA.
