Top 100 Dealers Are Acquiring, Renovating, and Building

To buy or to build? That’s a question all business owners ask themselves as they ponder strategies for growth. This year’s Modern Tire Dealer 100 is replete with examples of each as some dealers are opting for growth through acquisition and others are choosing to grow by building new stores.

Tire Discounters Runs 101 Stores in 5 States

Not all of Chip Wood’s tire customers were happy with the service at Tire Discounters in 1997. By most accounts, the company was a success, with 10 stores throughout the Cincinnati, Ohio, area.

Kenda Debuts Tech Center in Northeast Ohio

Even with a team of 25 engineers and $2 million worth of tire testing equipment in place, there is a lot of space to fill at Kenda Rubber Industrial Co.’s new technology center in Green, Ohio. Tom Williams, Kenda’s vice president of engineering, is planning to add more engineers and equipment to the 50,000-square-foot facility.

The DieHard tire will be priced higher than the Guardsman brand but lower than the Roadhandler brand. It “fills the gap on the private label side that we think is really important,” says Kaner.

Sears Is 'All In' on DieHard Tire Sales

Sears Holdings Corp. is lending its iconic DieHard brand to tires. Beginning this month the DieHard Silver Touring A/S will be sold in 36 T-rated sizes at all 650-ish Sears Auto Centers across the U.S. And there are more DieHard tire lines on the way, says Tom Park, president of the Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard brands division for Sears.

TPMS: General Motors/Chevrolet Colorado and Canyon, 2006-12

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) notifies the driver when a significant loss of tire pressure occurs in any of the four tires. The system uses the powertrain control module (PCM), body control module (BCM), instrument panel cluster (IPC), driver information center ( DIC), a radio frequency (RF) transmitting pressure sensor in each wheel/tire assembly, and the serial data circuit to perform the system functions.

Tire manufacturers from around the world have long been criticized for not paying enough attention toward how their products are presented and sold to the end user by tire dealers. However, recently I have heard about an enterprising scheme in Europe that just may change this perception and attitude in the future.


Ultimately, Selling Is All About Human Interaction

There is no record of the first sales transaction. Perhaps it involved one caveman selling a loin cloth to another caveman. If so, I’ll bet it was advertised as “extra soft.” That’s called salesmanship!


Look for Results Next Month to be More Positive

According to the results of our survey, demand for replacement tires decreased slightly in May. Indeed, from a volume standpoint the dealers reported they sold 0.6% fewer tires in May on a year-over-year basis, following a 0.2% decrease in April and a 0.1% decrease in March.
