Chinese tires lack quality -- true or false?

Posted on September 25, 2014

Consumer Reports recently included Chinese tires in a 20-tire comparison test. The Chinese tires finished 18th, 19th and 20th, respectively.

Does that make all Chinese tires potentially poor values? Does CR's tire program manager think that?! Does Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich think that?!

I think you know the answer to the latter question, but what about the first? To read about the issue in more detail, check out Ulrich's latest blog, "CR implies too many Chinese tires lack quality."

The Consumer Report report is timely given the United States government's interest in the record number of consumer tires imported from China. But is the report true, misleading or flat-out wrong?

This comes as no surprise as this has been our experience as well over the years. The Walmartization of America has caused a thirst for low cost products and as with many other products you get what you pay for. We don't push any Chinese brands unless it is absolutely fiscally necessary. However, the top tier manufactures that have factories in China seem to have pretty decent products because they have control of the material and quality processes.
