Goodyear takes a tumble

Posted on May 14, 2015

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. may be one of the most iconic tire companies in the world, but its brand took a beating on the latest list of “Top 500 U.S. brands” curated by Brand Finance plc.

The Akron, Ohio-based tire maker dropped 151 spots on the list, also known as “The Billion Dollar Brands Club.” The latest list puts Goodyear at No. 301. A year ago, Goodyear was ranked 150th.

Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich isn’t sure what to make of the ranking in his latest blog post. Has the Goodyear blimp suddenly become less recognizable?

Check out Ulrich’s blog and let him know what you think about Goodyear’s ranking. Did the list get it wrong? Did Goodyear make a big misstep somewhere along the way? Let him know by leaving a comment.

As a small independent tire dealer, I am not surprised at all by Goodyear's topple. They have become a competitor with their dealers, they have priced themselves as a top tier while not having the product to back it, and they have nothing on the back side to make it a profitable product when competing against the big boys. Many times I find the Discounts, Sears, etc. selling below my cost. I deliver thousands of Goodyear products annually, but because it is government and national account, it doesn't count. It's not on a retail level because I can't make ANY money selling their product.
